A Retirement Interest - Only (RIO) mortgage works similarly to a standard interest-only mortgage, but the loan is typically repaid when you sell the property, move into long-term care, or pass away. Because you are making monthly interest payments, the balance does not grow over time — unlike a standard lifetime mortgage.
