Why Google Reviews Matter - For Us, and For You

April 08, 20265 min read

When someone is thinking about getting a mortgage, they are not just choosing a product - they are choosing people to trust with one of the biggest financial decisions of their life. And more often than not, the first thing they do before picking up the phone is read the reviews.

As someone who works on the operations side at Aspect Mortgages, I see the effort that goes into every case from start to finish. I also see how much our Google reviews mean - not just as a number on a screen, but as a genuine reflection of what we do every day. This post explains how Google reviews actually work, why they carry so much weight for a small family firm like ours, and what they can tell you as a prospective client.

How do Google reviews work?

When you search for a business on Google, the reviews you see are collected and displayed through Google Business Profile - the listing that appears alongside search results and on Google Maps. Anyone with a Google account can leave a review, giving the business a rating out of five stars and an optional written comment.

Google uses a combination of the overall star rating, the number of reviews, and the recency of reviews to determine how prominently a business appears in local search results. A business with a high volume of recent, positive reviews is likely to appear higher in results than one with fewer reviews or a lower average rating. This means reviews are not just about reputation - they directly affect whether a business gets found in the first place.

Google has systems in place to detect and remove fake or incentivised reviews. Businesses are not permitted to offer any form of reward in exchange for a review, and Google actively filters out reviews that appear suspicious. Reviews can only be removed if they violate Google's policies - a business cannot simply delete a review it does not like.

Why do Google reviews matter so much to a small firm?

For a large bank or national brand, a review is a drop in the ocean. For a small, family-run business like Aspect Mortgages, every single review represents a real person, a real case, and a real relationship.

We do not have a marketing budget to match the big lenders. We do not have high street branches on every corner or national advertising campaigns. What we have is over 20 years of looking after clients in Lancashire and beyond, a team that genuinely cares about the outcomes it achieves, and a growing collection of reviews from people who have been through the process with us and wanted to say something about it afterwards.

That collection of reviews is one of the most honest representations of who we are as a business. It reflects not just whether we found someone a good mortgage rate, but whether we communicated well, whether we made a stressful process feel manageable, whether we went the extra mile when something complicated came up. The reviews that mean the most to us are the ones that mention specific moments - the phone call that put someone at ease, the problem that got solved quietly in the background, the client who felt genuinely looked after rather than just processed.

For a small firm, each review also has a compounding effect. One hundred genuine five-star reviews carry far more weight than ten, and four hundred carry more again - not just in terms of Google's algorithm, but in terms of the signal they send to someone who is trying to decide whether to trust you.

What do reviews tell you as a prospective client?

If you are considering using a mortgage broker and you are reading their reviews, here is what to look for beyond the overall star rating.

Volume and consistency matter more than perfection. A firm with 400 reviews averaging 4.9 stars has demonstrated consistency over a long period and a large number of clients. A firm with five reviews averaging five stars tells you very little - it is too small a sample to draw any conclusions from.

Read the written reviews, not just the numbers. The written comments are where you get a real sense of what it is like to work with a firm. Do reviewers mention feeling well-informed? Do they describe the adviser as approachable and easy to contact? Do they mention the firm being helpful when things got complicated? These details matter far more than a star rating alone.

Look at recency. A firm with great reviews from several years ago but very little recent activity may have changed significantly. Consistent, recent reviews suggest a firm that is actively looking after clients right now, not just coasting on past performance.

Look at how the firm responds. When a business responds to reviews - both positive and negative - it shows they are paying attention and that they value client feedback. The tone and content of responses can tell you a lot about the culture of a business.

What does a consistently five-star record tell you?

Aspect Mortgages has maintained a five-star rating across more than 400 reviews, and that consistency does not happen by accident. It is the result of the same approach being applied to every case - clear communication, honest advice, and a genuine commitment to getting the right outcome for each client regardless of how straightforward or complex their situation is.

For a prospective client, a long and consistent track record of five-star reviews is one of the most reliable signals available. It is not just one good experience or a handful of glowing comments from friends and family - it is hundreds of independent people, across many years, saying the same thing. That kind of consistency is very hard to fake and very easy to trust.

A final thought

We are genuinely proud of the reviews Aspect Mortgages has received over the years, and we do not take them for granted. Each one represents someone who took a few minutes out of their day after their mortgage completed to say thank you - and that means a great deal to everyone in the team.

If you are thinking about getting in touch and you have not yet read our reviews, we would encourage you to do so. And if you have been a client of ours and have not yet left a review, we would love to hear from you.
